Raja Ampat conservation and Papua sustainable tourism are key elements that make up Papua Diving Resorts, and it goes far beyond ocean conservation and the preservation of coral and marine life.

Papua Diving Resorts and First Steps

Max Ammer, Papua Diving Resorts Founder by Protect Blue

It all started with Max Ammer, our founder, who arrived in Raja Ampat in the 1990s with a dream of exploring its underwater wonders.

Max's initial explorations wouldn't have been possible without the help of local Papuans. They were the ones who guided him through the unfamiliar waters of the Dampier Strait, leading him to discover incredible WWII-era wrecks

At a time when diving in Raja Ampat was uncommon, to say the least, Max’s life depended on the local Papuans’ expertise on navigating the Dampier Strait.

From a relationship that started from a desire to find WWII-era wrecks, Max’s relationship with the local Papuan communities turned into one that would last, built on trust and passion.

This spirit of partnership continues to this day.

Maintaining Partnerships for Bird of Paradise Tours and Kalibiru Trips

Our connection with the local communities goes far beyond finding our way around. We've partnered with Papuan villagers for decades, working together to offer unforgettable experiences like Birds of Paradise tours and trips to the sacred Blue River (or Kalibiru).

One such partnership is with Pak Niko. Since the early days, Pak Niko has been Max's right-hand man in the quest to find the elusive Red Bird of Paradise. Pak Niko's expertise allows us to offer guests a unique opportunity to witness this creature in its natural habitat.

Our commitment extends beyond the Red Birds, as we also work closely with local guides who have a deep understanding of the Wilson's Bird of Paradise and its specific habitat.

These partnerships ensure our guests have a truly authentic experience while respecting the balance of Raja Ampat’s diverse ecosystems.

Another natural wonder that Raja Ampat offers is the Kalibiru, a crystal-clear blue river considered sacred by the local Papuan tribes.

To navigate this natural treasure, we collaborate with local guides who not only ensure guest safety but also share the cultural significance and legends surrounding the Kalibiru.

To support their work, a portion of the proceeds of these Birds of Paradise trips go directly to Pak Niko and local guides.

Partner with Local Farmers and Fishermen by Buying Food

Our commitment to local partnerships extends beyond tours and guides. We believe in supporting the economic well-being of the communities we're a part of, which is why we source a significant portion of our fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish from local farmers and fishermen.

Many locals in Raja Ampat are also seasonal farmers who produce a variety of vegetables and local fruits such as bananas, papayas, dragonfruits, yams, nuts and coconuts to generate additional income.

The local products that we purchase from these local Papuan farmers, as well as community and organic farms, are put to good use at Sorido Bay Resort and Kri Eco Resort.

This ensures our guests enjoy the freshest, most delicious ingredients while directly contributing to the local economy.

Partners on Land and at Sea

Our team of guides isn't just knowledgeable about the underwater world; they're experts on Raja Ampat's rich cultural heritage. Most of our guides are Papuan themselves, sharing their knowledge and stories with our guests.

Sometimes, in the evenings at Papua Diving Resorts, our staff will play traditional musical instruments and sing Papuan songs, serenading our guests with a touch of Papuan cultural experience.

These songs often surround the Papuans’ pride in their land and culture, celebrating the richness and pristine landscapes of Papua’s mountains and oceans.

Why Local Communities Matter

Partnering with local communities is more than just good business practice; it's at the heart of Papua Diving Resorts’ philosophy.

By working together, we ensure that tourism benefits not just visitors, but also the local Papuan people.

So, when you choose us, you're not just choosing a diving adventure; you're choosing to support a community that's been protecting this paradise for generations.
