Raja Ampat is not just about wildlife, marine creatures, diving, snorkeling, and sailing, there are lots of other fun activities to look forward to, including stand-up paddleboarding. Here at Papua Diving Kri Eco Resort, the beautiful crystal clear turquoise waters and soft powdery white sands are the perfect setting for stand-up paddleboarding. Guests can spend almost all day on the azure waters, paddling around and peering at life beneath the surface while taking in the beauty of the lush hills and Dampier Strait all around them. It’s a fun and safe low-impact Raja Ampat activity suitable for all ages.

From the bungalows situated right along the water’s edge, guests can go straight into the sea and paddleboard around Kri Island or to the famous sand bar in Raja Ampat, located right in front of our resort. Another option is to walk out onto our private jetty for stand-up paddleboarding over slightly deeper waters.

What Is Stand-Up Paddleboarding?

Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP for short, is a type of watersport where you stand on a long board and use a single paddle to propel yourself over the water. It’s a blend of surfing and kayaking, but instead of lying down and using your arms as you would while surfing, or sitting like you would while kayaking, you are standing, giving you a unique vantage point for viewing what’s underneath the surface and on the horizon. It is so much fun and it will give you a great full-body workout.

One of the best things about stand-up paddleboarding is that it doesn’t require a whole lot of gear or experience to enjoy. All you need is a paddleboard, a paddle, and a leash for your board so it won’t float away from you when you fall. You can also opt to wear a life vest or a life jacket, and bring a waterproof bag for your camera, phone, and other essentials. The waters surrounding Kri Island are relatively calm and glassy, so you can relax and enjoy stand-up paddleboarding at Kri Eco Resort without large waves or choppy waters getting in your way.

Learning To Stand Up On A Paddleboard

Standing up on a paddleboard takes practice and balance, but thanks to the board’s wide and stable design, you’ll soon find yourself standing and paddling in no time!

There are many different types of boards but the best boards for beginners should be about 30 inches (76 cm) wide and 11 feet (3.3 meters) long. We’re often asked if Raja Ampat is suitable for beginners and the answer is yes. Here are some tips to help you with your stand-up paddleboarding experience here at Kri Eco Resort.

Getting on your board:

  1. Bring your board and paddle on flat, calm water and lower yourself into the water.
  2. After that, use your one hand to hold the hook in the center of the board and use your other hand to grip the edge of the board on the other side.
  3. Then pull simultaneously so that your body floats upwards and also simultaneously use your feet to kick the surface of the water to help push your body upwards.
  4. After successfully rising, position your body face down and after stabilizing use both hands parallel to the face down position to push your body up.
  5. After successfully using your knees as well to support your body, then hold your paddle slowly.
  6. Then paddle slowly, and if you feel stable and confident you can stand up slowly using your hands to help you stand up.
